Emily was of Welsh-English ancestry but born in Lisbon (near Ogdensburg), New York. There were three Lawrence boys: Will, Miner, and Lewis. There were three sisters to Emily: Ann (Sullivan), Libby (Golden), and Mary (Merril).

John Leonard's Death Registration shows his birthplace as Winchester, but we know that he lived in the Williamsburg area, and then on to Winchester area (both Martin and John appear in the 1871 census in Winchester). The family homesteaded near Creelman Saskatchewan in c.1902, and then John Leonard and Emily bought a 50 acre farm in Huntley Twp. around 1906, near Carp Ontario, were they appear on the 1911 census. They later moved to the Winchester area, where they lived until the year before their deaths in 1926.

A John L Baker's farm appears on the 1879 map of Dundas County, Williamsburg Twp. at Lot 5, Con 6, just east of where Upper Canada Village now stands. He seems freely to have crossed the St. Lawrence River, eventually meeting Emily in New York State. [Need to confirm that this is the same JL Baker. Probably not, as we have JL in Winchester for both the 1871 and 1881 census.]
