John and Ann emigrated from Ireland, coming to Canada on the ship "Douglas" c.1820, settling in North Burgess Township. Land records (National Archives of Canada, MG9 D8-27 Vol Reel C-4651) show "John Gallagher, emigrant, Bathurst, C9, SW 1/2 Lot 8, located Dec. 3, 1821, 100 acres, no remarks." John appears on the census of the 1822 Perth Military Depot, Lanark County, at the same Bathurst address.

Sarah Jane Gallagher

Sarah Jane Gallagher (1820-1918) married William Grimsby (1826-1921); their daughter Annie (1861-1960) married Robert Beal (1860-1945); their daughter, Edna Jane (1893-1989) married William Seth Bradshaw (1895-1971). Edna Jane, had 10 children, seven who are still living (in 2005).

"Died. McKay At Elm Grove, On Sun. March 11, 1906, Elizabeth Gallagher, relict of the late George McKay, aged 77 years. She had been in failing health since the death of her husband two and a half years ago and last Friday was seized by a stroke and never regained consciousness. She was born in the Township of Bathurst and moved to the Gallagher farm on the shores of Rideau Lake. Fifty-nine years ago, when she married, she moved with her husband to Elm Grove farm on the shores of Otty Lake. The members of the family living are: John, on the homestead; Albert, in Edmonton, and Henry, in Minn.; Mrs. James Wilson, Otty Lake; and Mrs. Gordon McDonald, of Edmonton. One brother and three sisters survive her: Mr. Andrew Gallagher, Rideau Lake; Mrs. William Newman, Lombardy; Mrs. William Grimsby, Manitoba, and Miss Alice Gallagher, who resides quite close to the home where the deceased died. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon to Oliver's Cemetery and was largely attended."
